Breaking Barriers: Empowering Female Filmmakers in Kakuma Camps and Kalobeyei Settlements

Females have for a very long time not penetrated what the world calls the male-dominated jobs. Filmmaking is one of the careers dominated by males in Kakuma Camps and Kalobeyei Settlements. Over the few years, an extremely small number of women have been recorded getting involved in the field of filmmaking under the higher number of raising local media firms, which are run by young refugees. At the various media training programs, a smaller number of women is also recorded, leaving the field well served to boys and not girls. On one of my typical storytelling days, I met one South Sudanese lady who resides in Kalobeyei Village 2. Immaculate is a 19 years old photographer, scriptwriter, and film trainer who gained her filmmaking skills from one of Film Aid Kenya’s media hub training. Immaculate, who runs a media club at her secondary school, Kalobeyei Settlement Secondary School, got a scholarship to study film in the United States of America in 2024 through a mentorship program from #IamTheCode.Immaculate Emmanuel is a form four student, who is undergoing the last touches of her career-developing journey. Immaculate grew up as one of the few people whose dreams are far from becoming a doctor, a lawyer, an astronaut, or some of the big career milestones like Neurosurgeon. Immaculate always wanted to be a journalist.

When I was young, I used to watch horror movies. I used to ask my mother if the images were real, but she never answered any of my questions because she was unsure. ImmaculateOn her journey to answer the questions that no one could answer for her, Immaculate joined a film training program that equipped her with skills in filmmaking and photography. With this skill, Immaculate has at this moment formed a film club at her secondary school, training her fellow students and equipping them with skills that are around Videography, photography, scripting, and all the aspect of storytelling. When I started to fulfill my filmmaking journey, I faced a lot of challenges from our male counterparts that were looking down on me, but I never gave up. I would like to tell my fellow girls that we should always set our goals and chase them no matter what comes our way. Immaculate.
